For this week’s cover story, we asked young New Yorkers about their dream futures, the well-furnished lives they yearn to lead 15 years from now. Then we talked to people who actually lead those lives and calculated how much they cost. We had certain expectations going into it, but they were frequently confounded. Most of all, the people we talked to craved high-end domesticity — a life with a partner and kids in brownstone Brooklyn. Of course, half the households in New York simply cannot afford to live here; according to one report, it takes around $100,000 a year just to reasonably get by. We hope this is useful for young New Yorkers asking themselves, What part of my dreams should change — or of my plans for paying for them?
