In August, we took a look inside the sketchbooks of Lola Stong-Brett , teem ing with uninhibited pencil drawings that feed into her large-scale, semi-abstract paintings. Her sketchbooks are occupied with ambiguous, eerie, and humorous characters that evoke old-fashioned cartoons, often caught in moments of bizarre conflict. I love how forms seem to spring spontaneously from the pages of Lola's sketchbooks, bringing with them ideas about emotion, contradiction, and tension.
