Welcome to New York When this magazine began publishing over 50 years ago
the founders made a crucial decision: They would call the magazine New York , but they would not restrict it to the city as a matter of geography, even though New York City's news would always have a place in it. That allowed it to cover power everywhere — Washington and Hollywood and, eventually, Silicon Valley; the rise of feminism ( Ms. magazine sprang from its pages) and social movements of all kinds; grifters and scandals; fashion, design, and — gloriously, obsessively — food. It was a magazine about “the new,” and it was also never afraid of new things.
That expanded to include “digital magazines” as the internet began to make its presence felt, which we now know as our family of sites, including Intelligencer, the Cut, Vulture, the Strategist, Curbed, and Grub Street. Each site is focused on the subjects of our readers’ perennial interests and filtered through our point of view.
