Swathed in “union drip” like his Versace sunglasses and diamond earrings, Amazon Labor Union president Chris Smalls represents a labor politics buttressed by the belief that 40 hours of work a week should afford workers more than just basic survival. He’s at the vanguard of a new wave of organized-labor fights spurred by the pandemic. Smalls attained a national profile earlier this year, when Amazon workers at the JFK8 fulfillment center in Staten Island voted to unionize. But there’ve also been setbacks since then, and Amazon is waging a white-knuckled war against the burgeoning movement. Are Smalls’ give-no-fucks methods a boon or a liability?
