Our anniversary "Yesteryear" issue tracks New York City's longtime fascination with — and ability to produce — "It" girls, from the '20s to the '20s. What's an "It" girl? Well, there are a few signifiers. "It" girls are primarily (though not exclusively) young, they go out, they're a bit mysterious, and they probably have either two jobs or no job. She's somebody “everyone is drawn to — someone people want to gossip about,” says Patrick McMullan, the nightlife photographer who for nearly 40 years has been a fixture of the New York scene. Traditionally, "It" girls didn't seek "It" themselves — that would be very not "It." More recently, with the bully pulpit of social media, the latest crop of "It" girls is expected to share, interact, opine, and become and maintain brands. "You can learn a lot about a place by looking at what it can’t look away from," writes Matthew Schneier. "'It' fame offers a girl-shaped reflection of the spirit, fears, and aspirations of the day."
